Reservations based on caste factors is the reason behind sexual exploitation of women”
– Ongaaram Director’s allegation
“In today’s situation, an unsafe and insecure environment for women prevails that curbs down their attempts to pursue higher education. To be precise, female students in private colleges are subjected to sexual exploitation. The main reason behind all such mishaps is the reservation given based on caste as a merit rather than economic criteria. Furthermore, to offer proper security and safeguard the women from such social evils, there has to be an amendment in law and order,” says the director of this film ‘Ongaaram’, who plays the content-driven protagonist in this movie.
Filmmaker Kenthiran Muniasami, who shot to fame for his critically acclaimed movies like Ayyan and Seththu Bhoomi is directing and playing the lead role in ‘Ongaaram’. While he plays the role of a content-driven protagonist, Varsha Viswanath appears as the female lead character. The others in the star cast include Srither,Madhan Duraisamy, Jintha, Murugan, Ezhumalaiyan, Sivakumar, Delta, Veera, and many more prominent actors who are appearing in pivotal characters.
Sam K Ronald is handling cinematography and twins V.T. Bharathi and V.T. Monish together have composed music. Gnanakaravel, who has penned lyrics for several Chartbuster hit songs, has penned lyrics for this movie. Jayaseelan has handled the art department and editing works are undertaken by V.S. Vishal.
Ongaaram which revolves around the female lead character emphasizing the protection and safeguarding of women is produced on a grand scale by Kowsalya of Yellow Cinemas Production. Rekha and Karthika are co-producing this movie.
Shedding lights on the film, the director says, “The film is set against the backdrops of Madurai city. The story revolves around a girl, who pursues a graduation course at a private college, where she undergoes sexual harassment. Her attempts to raise her voice against these evil miscreants go eclipsed due to the strong influences of money and the domination of the ruling class. During this juncture, she meets a social activist named ‘Puli’ and shares her pathos. The crux of the film is all about the attempts of the character ‘Puli’, who wants to seek justice for the sake of this innocent girl and bring the evildoers before the law.
In this film, a strong emphasis has been laid on the fact that the law should be amended and implemented firmly and immediately to protect women, who are sexually exploited. Besides, we have tried suggesting a small factor that caste-based reservation is the cause of all such sexual harassment of women students in private colleges, and hence, caste-based reservations should be replaced by economic reservations.
Although the movie delves into the theme of focussing on sexual exploitation faced by women students and the suggestions to safeguard their rights, ‘Ongaaram’ will have a beautiful commercial package of romance, sentiments, action, and all factors that savor the tastes of audiences from all walks of life.”
The shooting of ‘Ongaaram’ is already completed and the postproduction work is happening in full swing. The first look of this film recently unveiled has garnered a phenomenal response. The official announcement about the film’s teaser and the audio launch will be made soon.
