New Spiritual Getaway in Chennai
Yogoda Satsanga Society’s New Ashram Becomes a Sanctuary for City Dwellers

Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS) has announced the launch of its first South India Ashram the “Yogoda Satsanga Sakha Ashram Chennai” in a grand ceremony on September 15th. This marks the fifth YSS ashram in India, alongside those in Ranchi, Dakshineswar, Dwarahat, and Noida.

YSS was founded in 1917 by world-renowned Guru, Paramahansa Yogananda, the author of bestselling spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi. Yogananda is celebrated as the “Father of Yoga” in the West, having founded the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) in Los Angeles, California, in 1920.

For over 100 years, YSS has served countless spiritual seekers worldwide, sharing the scientific Kriya Yoga meditation techniques and the “how-to-live” teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda. Passed down through a lineage of revered Gurus tracing back to Mahavatar Babaji, these teachings are available through Yogananda’s home-study Kriya Yoga Lessons, which are offered in multiple regional Indian languages. YSS also shares Yogananda’s recordings and publications on balanced living and offers various spiritual programmes led by Yogoda monks, inspiring seekers both in India and abroad.

YSS/SRF’s President and spiritual head, Sri Sri Swami Chidananda Giri inaugurated the Ashram following a live-streamed talk titled “Kriya Yoga: The Answer to Inner and Outer Turmoil”. In the talk, Swami Chidananda discussed how the ancient, scientific technique of Kriya Yoga is an advanced and enduring method of interiorising one’s consciousness, with the resultant experience of peace enabling one to address the root cause of turmoils. He also explained how Paramahansa Yogananda’s home-study Lessons provide a clear insight into this scientific technique while connecting seekers to a lineage of Gurus who have been divinely ordained to spread Kriya Yoga in the world.

The event was graced by senior sannyasis from the Yogoda monastic order, including Swami Ishwarananda Giri (General Secretary of YSS), and Swami Pavitrananda Giri, both members of the YSS Board.

Nestled near the tranquil Mannur Lake and a lush reserve forest, the new Chennai Ashram offers a peaceful sanctuary for devotees across South India. With the home study lessons becoming available in Tamil and Telugu, the Ashram also serves as a nucleus for South India’s growing interest in the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda. Resident sannyasis conduct daily morning and evening meditations, special commemorative events, and provide counselling to devotees. The Ashram’s inauguration also enhances YSS’ charitable activities in the area, which include medical camps and education assistance to residents of the nearby village. Visitors are welcome to immerse themselves in the serene, meditative atmosphere free of cost.
