Media should encourage debutant directors – Marmar director’s request
The cinematographer who worked after receiving treatment for an injury sustained during the shooting – Marmar director Lainichi
The success rate of Tamil films is only 4 to 6% – Distributor Kugan Varutham
“Marmar” is emerging as the first found footage horror film in the Tamil film industry. The film Marmar was released recently. The film, which was released amidst great expectations, has been receiving a good response from the fans. Initially, the film was released in only 100 screens. However, with the huge support of the fans, the number of screens doubled on the second day of its release.
As the film continues to receive a great response, a thanksgiving ceremony was held in Chennai on behalf of the Marmar film crew. The actors, actresses and crew who acted in the film participated in this ceremony.
Speaking at the event, the film’s production designer Hassini said, “Hello everyone. You have watched and enjoyed our film and turned it into a blockbuster. Without you, we would not have come this far. Thank you to the production and directorial team. Especially the director of this film did not hire an assistant director and worked alone throughout the film. That too, he shot the ghost film in the jungles. Kudos to him for that. It is a great honor. Thank you to all the actors and actresses who acted in the film. In some scenes, only the head is visible. They had to hide inside for hours while shooting such scenes. Also, thank you to everyone who gave their full effort for this film,” he said.
The film’s producer S.P.K. While speaking, Prabhakaran of Pictures said, “Thank you to everyone in the press and media industry. Greetings and heartfelt thanks to the people of Tamil Nadu who took the film Marmar to the streets. Hemnath sir has completed this film and today the film is running in almost 400 screens across Tamil Nadu. The director of this film is the embodiment of hard work. He is a blessing to me. At this young age, he has thought of the kind of film that will be successful if made and has made it exactly that. As a producer, I am happy with this film. Thank you to Kugan sir who came forward to distribute this film. I treated him like a brother. Everyone worked hard. I remember their character’s name more than everyone’s name. It has been like that since I heard the story of the film. It is so close to the truth. The film’s cinematographer Jason has done a wonderful job. The sound designer Kevin worked day and night with the director of this film. The editor Rohit did a great job. I don’t know what else to say except thank you to all of you. Rishi, this film has created a fan base for him. Apart from this, my SPK team only went home to sleep for the last four or five days. Also, it has been almost 12 years since my company started. Till now, my team has never worked on the second and fourth Saturdays and Sundays. But, they worked on Sundays for this film. I express my deepest gratitude to all the SPK team who are making money all over the world. You have worked so hard. Thank you to SRP sir who was the first to tweet for us, thank you to Arya sir who tweeted, “Positive things are happening from the Marmar movie.” In the past, a film made by a first-time director, a first-time producer and other teams together has never become a blockbuster. Thank you to director Hemnath sir who made this happen and made it a success. I have been to various parts of India and I consider myself a hard worker. But the work done by director Hemnath and his hard work was very impressive. Thanks to him again. Now the distributor of the film has said that the film Marmar has become a blockbuster. Thanks again to the media industry. This film is an example that even if it is young or new, it can only create a little buzz and come out of it successfully. Thanks to everyone,” he said.
While Gugan, the distributor of the film Marmar, said, “Hello to all the friends of the press and media. There are no platforms for the press to see, and there are no artists who have not seen the cinema industry. I see the Marmar team as a child born yesterday. I see this platform as very important. I will tell you why. The Marmar team is a new child in the century-old cinema industry. You have been giving your heartfelt support to this. Thank you all a million for this.
The crew is very small. The film stars Rishi, Yuvika, Sukanya and Devaraj. None of them met you during the previous press conference of the film. That was something new. The promotional activities that followed were all different. The look and story of the film were all new. This is a great welcome in the Tamil film industry. Your applause is very important to them. S.P.K. Productions, which acted as the backbone of this film and brought the film to fruition, is a big deal. A huge thank you to producer Prabhakaran sir for that. Not only him, but also many of his friends and relatives have worked together for this film. I think the strength of this crew has made this film a complete success. On this occasion, I would like to thank everyone at Dream Warrior Pictures, S.R. Prakash Babu Anna, S.R. Prabhu, Aravind, Kathir, Potential Studios Thanga Prabhakaran sir for giving me this opportunity. Initially, 100 screens were allotted for this film, and after that, the number of screens gradually increased every day. I would like to express my gratitude to all of our team members, Pradeep, Prithvi, Ganesh, Praveen, Kalyana Sundaram Anna, Thiagarajan Anna, Muniyappan, and Karthi. They not only supported us, but also gave us a great welcome and support in multiplexes and single-screen theaters. Badu Ramesh sir, S Pictures Seenu sir, Chairman Tiruppur Subramaniam Anna, Mannar sir, Azhagar Anna, and Pratap sir gave us a great welcome. All of them are the main reason for bringing this film to everyone. I would like to thank everyone once again. I will tell you two reasons why this platform is important. This can only be said on the success platform. Currently, if a new director or producer comes, the success rate of Tamil films in Tamil Nadu is only 5 to 6 percent. In a film industry where 250 films are released every year, not all of them are successful. Only one film per month is successful. When calculating a film, only 4 to 6 percent of films are box office successes. If we look at the profit that the producer gets, it is only 4 to 6 percent. If we ask why this situation is, Tamil Nadu has a population of 8 crore people. If all of them watch films, those films will drive the collection. Pushpa 2 achieved such success. If we ask how many of these people can we say that the film is successful, generally ten percent, that is, 8 million people, should watch the film. If we calculate this, it will be 160 crore rupees. In that way, if a film collects Rs. 160 crore, it will be a successful film. If we ask whether it gets one percent of this, then only that producer knows. The success can be determined based on the budget with which he has made the film. When the success percentage is 4 to 6 percent, think about what to do. Come up with an idea. Decide what to do to be successful. Producers in the film industry already know this calculation very well. When new producers come in, the success rate can be calculated like this. I shared it here so that new producers entering the film industry will find this information useful. The second important thing is that when films like Marmar are released, at least ten films are released in the same week. If you look at it that way, only the ten films that are released with this film should not be considered as competition for this. The other ten films that were released before this film will have to face competition with ten films released before that, a total of thirty films. In addition, when you add the films that are released on OTT every week, there are about 50 films competing for a film that is released every week. How to look at this, each film is made by its respective team with full effort and hard work. Even so, what determines success? There was a confusion in the middle, they say that if you promote a film, it will be successful. All 250 films that are released are released only after being promoted. It is very rare for a film to be released without being promoted. You can only get the audience to come to the first show of a film by promoting it. You can’t do that after that. For the audience to come past the first show, they have to like the film. Only if the film is good will the word reach more people and the film will become successful. Another thing that happens beyond this is that every time a film is released, there are actors in it.
There will be many fights from various sides, including the actors, actresses and their fans. We have to overcome that. This group also lost heart at one point. At that time, I told them that this is what they should not worry about when looking at the rating of the film. There is an example of this. Everyone studies to get 100 marks in the exam, but those who get 100 marks are seen as the best. Apart from this, each one is given a name and explanation for 90 marks, 8 marks and 70 marks. In that way, in cinema too, we give a rating of 6, 7 to every film. That film is mostly seen as a failure. My opinion is that the system of giving ratings to films should be abolished. I have also complained to the association about this. We need to see how it is happening. Work is underway on this. Films are given a rating from 1 to 10. There is no rating beyond 10, they are mostly given 1, 2. This will only lead cinema to the path of destruction. I humbly say that this is not necessary. Beyond all this, there is competition. You should not get carried away with anything here. Have faith in your product. Focus only on your film. You will definitely succeed. There are many good distributors like us to help you. We can bring the film on time. You also travel with that faith, we are also traveling. Thanks to all the technical team. Thank you for the opportunity, greetings,” he said.
While speaking, the director of the film, Hemnath Narayanan, said, “Hello everyone. We meet again. You are also looking confident, we are also confident. First of all, I would like to thank everyone who has come here. First of all, thank you to the producer. I had a lot of faith in myself and others. You also put the same faith in me. That is why this film has come to this. With faith in me and everyone else, starting this film, it has now become a successful film. You have not left any shortcomings on your part as the producer and distributor. You are the backbone of the success of this film. A big thank you for that. A big thank you to the production manager Nagaraj sir. Thank you to the actors who acted in the film. Everyone asked where the actors are and what the problem is. There is no problem, everyone is here. Thank you very much to Rishi, you have come from Mumbai. I know that after MS Dhoni, I think you will be the North Indian that everyone wants. The hashtag Rishi Gang has emerged. Everyone is shouting in the theaters too. Thank you very much to Devaraj sir. I have done a lot of torture, I know how many tags I asked. Only you and I know how difficult it is. I hope that all of you will get a chance to act in more films after this. Since it is a found footage film, a separate team of focus puller, assistant cinematographer and assistant will always be ready in this film. The biggest challenge for the actors in this film will be that they have to act looking at the camera. In other films, they don’t have to look at the camera. But this film is different. Many people have been scolded by the camera while acting in the next film, please forgive me. I would like to thank the cinematographer Jason. He has come here after a lot of retakes, back pain and then treatment. He is a cinematographer for a director. No matter how many retakes he has done, he has never let up, thank you very much. The editor Rohit has now become an associate director. He is the one who takes me wherever I go. Thank you very much Rohit. You will get more films. We will work together. The last person to join our team was Kevin Frederick, but today, he is the first person people talk about, beyond me. Thank you very much Kevin. Your hard work is incredible. Whenever I call you, you have come to work. We have done a lot of tests. We have seen the recognition for it in the cinema hall. It is very happy. Thank you Kugan sir. It is almost like a family. Your work is helping us. We have not lost hope, you have also looked after us like that. I think we also look after you like that. Thank you very much sir. The film’s production designer, Hassini, was involved in all the work in the film. As far as this film is concerned, everything is just a name, but everyone did all the work. It’s not that there were no assistant directors, they did all the work. Assistant director Harish fell down and got hit. Thank you very much Harish. You must have worked very hard.
[3/14, 15:48] R. S. Prakash: I will. There was another co-director. Lakshmi Arun. He is currently working on another film. That is why he is not here. Thank you very much Lakshmi Arun. Thank you to the production manager Arun. Selden could not be here today. Thank you very much to him and his assistant team. Thank you to the co-cinematographer Kesavan. Not only the producer but his entire team at S.P.K. Productions helped us. They even fed us and worked hard without eating. Thank you very much to Mac Media. They did everything we asked for very well, thank you very much. Thank you very much to everyone in the media. I did not think that you would write so much about our film. Many people had written about our film in a good way. Thank you very much. I request you to continue doing this. Your work will inspire and motivate many more people like me. I would like to meet you on more platforms with this same team. Thank you very much to everyone. A big thank you to you too, Sri Venkatesh. “Despite your sister’s wedding preparations, our work was also going on whenever we contacted her. Thank you very much, Sri Venkatesh,” he said.
The film is written and directed by Hemnath Narayanan. The film is produced by Prabhakaran and Stand Alone Pictures International under S.P.K. Pictures. Jason Williams handles the cinematography, Kevin Frederick handles the sound design and Rohit handles the editing.
