Captain Prabhakaran to be re-released in a grand manner after 34 years
Vijayakanth’s ‘Captain Prabhakaran’ to be released in 4K quality
For every hero, there is definitely a film that marks a milestone in their film journey. The film that was released as a crowning achievement for the late revolutionary artist Captain Vijayakanth is ‘Captain Prabhakaran’.
Captain Prabhakaran is a film that has captivated not only Captain fans but also fans from all walks of life. While most heroes failed to achieve success in their hundredth film, Captain Vijayakanth was the only one who achieved great success by releasing his hundredth film. Not only that, Captain Prabhakaran gifted him the epithet Captain in keeping with the times and circumstances. Vijayakanth was happy to name his eldest son Vijaya Prabhakaran as a memento of the success given by this film.
To celebrate the 34th anniversary of the release of such a prestigious film, it is getting a grand re-release soon. Film Vision Company’s Ramu has digitally remastered the film in 4K quality and 7.1 sound mixing.
‘Captain Prabhakaran’, which has been converted to 4K quality, is set to release in about 500 theaters across Tamil Nadu. Karthik Venkatesan is re-releasing the film on behalf of Murugan Film Factory and Sparrow Cinemas.
The film was released on 14th April 1991 as a Tamil New Year release and was produced by A.S. Ibrahim Rawathar on behalf of IV Cine Productions. Director RK Selvamani, who gave Captain Vijayakanth the super hit Pulan Pariyar, directed this film in a grand manner, as his second film and the captain’s 100th film. Director RK Selvamani had not only made the film as a film, but also taught a lesson to the creators who came after him through this film.
As if everything is perfect for a film, this film has music by music composer Ilayaraja, cinematography by Rajarajan, dialogues by Liaquat Ali Khan, Sarathkumar as a villain who gets promoted to hero, Mansoor Ali Khan as a debut villain Veerapadran, Rupini, Ramya Krishnan and Livingston, and many others have been supporting this film, and many have achieved a turning point in their film career through this film.
The songs Pasamulla Pandiyare and Atama Therottama, which were composed by Isaigniani Ilayaraja, have become celebratory songs that are always present in festivals and special homes in every town. Not only that, Isaigniani was also impressive in the background music for each scene. Especially, he handled the special background music for the introduction scene of revolutionary artist Vijayakanth, the scene where he travels into the forest, and the scenes related to Veerabhadra, which were remarkable throughout the film.
Another strength of this film is the cinematographer Rajarajan. It can be said that he had taken an aesthetic lesson throughout the film to the point that one is left bewildered as to what to appreciate in his cinematography, including the Western Ghats, its dense forests, the vast expanses of forest, and the breathtaking train fight scenes.
Liyakhat Ali Khan’s fiery political dialogues, whether delivered by Captain Vijayakanth or by a debutant actor Mansoor Ali Khan, were met with applause from the audience in the theaters. It is another story that audio cassettes were released for these dialogues at the time of the film’s release and sold in the millions, setting a record.
The speciality of this film is that director RK Selvamani has carved out the film inch by inch in a way that will amaze not only the 90s but also the 2K youth of today, as to how such a grand film was made back then. Today, if the youth crowd celebrating the film ‘Pushpa’, which was made in the backdrop of red wood smuggling, sees the film ‘Captain Prabhakaran’ and is surprised that they have already given an action film called Captain Prabhakaran starring Vijayakanth as a precursor to Pushpa.
In that way, if there is a ‘Pushpa’ for Andhra Pradesh now, it can be said that there was a ‘Captain Prabhakaran’ for Tamil Nadu back then.
