Post-Independence, how was the situation in some parts of the country -was the theme of Naam Pirandha Mann (1977) which featured Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesh, Kamal Haasan etc.-that approached that aspect from a different perspective!
Well, this flick created and helmed by a debutante, Ponkumar deliberates on yet another perspective, namely, the plight and predicament of an innocent lot inhabiting a god forsaken village wherein the news that the country has attained Independence!
Set against the backdrop of an imaginary hamlet, Sengadu, spanning three days at the time of declaration of Independence to our Motherland by the Britishers, the screenplay scans the situation there, where the entire neighborhood is blissfully unaware of the country attaining Independence!
The director has tactfully woven a love story of a youth named Paraman and his love of life, Deepali (Revathy Sharma) and his mission to extricate the villagers from slavery and ignorance of what is happening around, in the country!
The filmmaker also rises some pertinent questions about the meaning of freedom and how the villagers interpret it!
Richard Aston playing the tyrannical British General, Robert Clive is an embodiment of evil while his son, Justin (Jason Shah) is lecherous!
How Paraman goes about his mission is the rest narrated in a fairly interesting manner. The premise has been well thought of but the same cannot be said of the execution which fails to pack a punch!
The production values are commendable given the magnitude of the project but the scenes and sequences could have been mounted a lot better!
The performances of the principal cast is passable.
The music of Sean Roldan passes muster.
An earnestly attempted period flick that is set around three days-August 14th, 15th and 16th!
