Semmalar Annam’s Mayilaa Unveils its Teaser on Women’s Day Following IFFR Premiere and NETPAC Nomination
Chennai, March 8: On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the makers of Mayilaa unveil the film’s teaser, offering a glimpse into a story that reflects the strength, resilience, and everyday courage of women.
Written and directed by Semmalar Annam, Mayilaa is set in rural Tamil Nadu and follows the journey of a working woman striving for dignity, independence, and survival, seen through the eyes of her young daughter. Through this perspective, the film reflects the lived realities of many women whose quiet determination and sacrifices shape families and communities.
Mayilaa had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), where it screened in the Bright Future section, a platform that highlights emerging voices in global cinema. The film was also nominated for the NETPAC Award by the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema, which recognises outstanding Asian films and filmmakers.
Semmalar Annam, director of Mayilaa, says the film draws inspiration from the everyday lives of women whose strength often goes unnoticed:
“Mayilaa comes from observing the lives of women around us. Many of them carry enormous responsibilities but rarely receive recognition for it.
