The New Film from the Director of ‘Appa Venampa’ — ‘Mudarkanal’ — Hits Theaters This May
Centered on the Scourge of Drug Abuse, ‘Mudarkanal’ is Set for a May Release
Produced by R. Pothiraj, DFT, under the banner of Sri Genga Productions, ‘Mudarkanal’ is the latest cinematic venture. R. Venkataramanan—known for directing films such as ‘Appa Venampa’ and ‘Athaiyum Thaandi Punithamanathu’—has written the story, screenplay, and dialogues, in addition to directing this film.
The cast features a host of newcomers—including Ashwin, Vignesh, Rajesh, Yogesh, Lakshmanan, Aadhi, Harikrishnan, Hari, Balaji, Akash, Sreejith, Pratap, Deepa Padmanabhan, Karuppasamy, and Thiruvengadakrishnan—alongside a supporting ensemble comprising Dr. Siva, Ramasamy, Thanuja, Rohini, Sajan, Manikumar, Shivakumar, Rukmani, Ilakkiya, Arutprakash, Chandrasekaran, Madhan, and Ganesh Subramaniam.
Director Venkataramanan—who previously delivered the commercially successful film ‘Appa Venampa,’ which vividly portrayed the extent to which a family can be devastated by alcohol abuse—has crafted ‘Mudarkanal’ with a specific focus: exploring how the lives of today’s youth are derailed by drug culture, and the profound impact this has on their families. Speaking about the film, Director Venkata Ramanan stated: “Today, drug usage is rampant across the country—and indeed, across the globe. Unlike the intoxication and degradation caused by alcohol, these synthetic drugs ruin the lives of young people in a very short span of time. We see reports of drug-related cases in the news on a daily basis. Furthermore, it was only when I personally visited drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centers that I witnessed firsthand the tragic reality: individuals ranging from school-going adolescents to college students and working professionals—many of whom have fallen prey to drug addiction—have completely lost themselves in the process.
Consequently, the idea arose: ‘Why not make a film about this very issue?’ It is the result of this thought process that the film Mudarkanal was created. Even children and young adults who are hesitant to consume alcohol easily fall into the clutches of these substances; this is partly because they are available at very low prices, and partly because they can be consumed discreetly without anyone finding out. We have powerfully conveyed the underlying psychological complexities behind this issue, as well as the profound impact it has on every affected family.
At the same time, this film has been crafted as a family entertainer, replete with commercial elements designed to appeal to audiences from all walks of life. Although many of the actors in the film are newcomers, they were the perfect fit for this particular story. They have delivered excellent performances and made significant contributions to the film. I, too, have played a role in the film—that of a lawyer,” he added.
This film is scheduled to hit theaters in May.
