‘Thaninayagan’

Release of the documentary on ‘Tamil Ambassador’ Father Thaninayagan

Director and poet Brindha Sarathy, who directed the documentary on Kaviko last year, has directed a documentary this year on the ‘Tamil Ambassador’ Father Thaninayagan. From the interactions held with him…

“Father Thaninayagam Adigal was a scholar who served the Tamil language in myriad ways.

He was a profound scholar who proclaimed to the world that Tamil is not merely a regional language, but a universal language embodying global thought; furthermore, he was the one who translated this vision into reality.

He united Tamil scholars from across the globe to establish the ‘World Tamil Forum,’ sowed the seeds for the concept of the ‘World Tamil Conference,’ and successfully organized the inaugural World Tamil Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Subsequently, he paved the way for Tamil research to be conducted in various international languages.

He identified and documented the traces of Tamil presence across numerous countries worldwide.

He traveled to over fifty nations, propagating the greatness of Tamil in every land he visited.

He mastered international languages and used them to introduce Tamil literature, culture, and history to people in their own tongues.

He discovered early printed Tamil books in European libraries, republished them, and thereby enriched the legacy of printed Tamil literature. He was instrumental in establishing Tamil chairs at numerous universities around the world.

He founded and edited the English research journal Tamil Culture. By writing and publishing over 200 articles in English on Tamil literature and culture, he drew global attention to the language and was a key figure in the effort to secure ‘Classical Language’ status for Tamil.

He authored profound research works such as Tamil Thoodhu (Tamil Envoy), Ondre Ulagam (One World), Nature in Sangam Literature, Educational Thoughts in Ancient Tamil Literature, and Thiruvalluvar.

He was a pioneer who laid the foundation for the field of Comparative Literature within Tamil studies.

Such was the multifaceted genius of Father Thaninayagam Adigal.

Driven by the concern that Thaninayagam should not become one of the great figures forgotten by Tamils, the Tamil Heritage Foundation [dedicated] its Silver Jubilee year…” Deciding to celebrate the year in honor of Thaninayagam Adigal, the foundation organized numerous meetings across schools, colleges, and literary forums throughout the previous year, ensuring his greatness resonated far and wide.

As part of this initiative, Dr. K. Subashini, the founder of the trust, planned the creation of a documentary on Thaninayagam Adigal and entrusted me with the responsibility of directing it. Through my conversations with Dr. Subashini—who is deeply involved in various research and documentation projects—I realized that Thaninayagam Adigal serves as a profound source of inspiration for her.

We produced this documentary over the course of the year by reading and taking notes from various books about Thaninayagam Adigal and conducting interviews with numerous scholars.

Many individuals, including university vice-chancellors and Tamil scholars, have shared their perspectives on Thaninayagam Adigal in this documentary.

A preview of the documentary was released on August 23, 2026, during the valedictory ceremony of the Tamil Heritage Foundation’s Silver Jubilee celebrations at the Tamil Virtual Academy in Chennai. The preview was released by the Honorable Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Thiru J.C.D. Prabhakar, and received by the Honorable Minister for School Education, Thiru Rajmohan, and the Honorable Minister for Information Technology, Thiru Kumar.

Speaking on the occasion, Honorable Minister Thiru Rajmohan praised the effort, stating, “Brother Brindha Sarathi has accomplished a magnificent task by writing and directing the documentary on Thaninayagam Adigal. As a student of Tamil, he has fulfilled a lifelong duty. This achievement will elevate his stature.”

I consider this praise a fitting reward for the work I undertook over the past year.

Later that evening, Thiru Nassar, President of the South Indian Artistes’ Association, formally released the full documentary and delivered a congratulatory address.

Thaninayagam Adigal, a visionary with a global outlook, now traverses the digital landscape of the world. The documentary Thaninayagan is currently available on YouTube, featuring narration by actor Nassar.

Let us take a few moments to learn about Father Thaninayagam, a man who single-handedly accomplished tasks that would have required the combined efforts of many scholars over several years.

The documentary has a runtime of 40 minutes.
