Monica Srivastava from Netflix said…

“‘#Love’ marks Netflix’s first Tamil romantic drama series. Netflix continues to place significant emphasis on South Indian stories. We are particularly keen to present unique storylines, distinctive voices, and fresh approaches in Tamil content. In this vein, ‘#Love’ tells a romantic story through a modern and playful lens.

The series features two rival dating app founders. One believes that love is based on compatibility, while the other insists that chemistry is what matters most. As they compete to prove their respective theories right, love ends up altering their plans entirely. Beyond the question of whether or not we have used dating apps, the series explores how love itself can sometimes transform our very perceptions of love.

The show’s creator and director, Balaji Mohan, possesses a talent for portraying the realities of everyday relationships through his signature humorous perspective.

Showrunner and producer Soundarya Rajinikanth has crafted the world of ‘#Love’ with a clear vision from the very beginning. We extend our gratitude to everyone involved, including writer Nirmal Williams, co-writers Sharadha Subramanian and Swetha Chakravarthy, music composer Sean Roldan, and editors Sai Muthuraman and Siva.

The chemistry between Arjun Das and Aishwarya Lekshmi—who play the characters Mathew and Tara—is a major strength of the series. Netflix’s aim is to offer audiences a unique world and a fresh emotional experience with every project, and in that regard…” “Thank you all; ‘Love’ will be a work that reflects the romance and relationships of today’s youth,” he said. Speaking on the occasion, Soundarya Rajinikanth, who served as the showrunner and producer, said:

“Today is a very special day for all of us. I extend my gratitude to Netflix—and especially to Monica—for trusting me with this story. The experience of working with her during the script-reading session for the ‘#Love’ series in Mumbai was truly special. The inspiration she provided, helping me evolve into a better producer and storyteller, is something I will never forget.

I am not easily impressed by things, simply because I am ‘Thalaivar’s’ daughter. When you live with someone who is revered by everyone, the tendency to be awestruck by others diminishes. However, Monica truly impressed me. She is an exceptional leader and a tremendous source of inspiration. I thank her for giving me the opportunity to work as a producer and showrunner for Netflix. I also want to thank Abhishek and Sudhanshu, who journeyed with me at every stage.

Serving as the showrunner and producer of a Netflix Original series is a massive responsibility. The line from Spider-Man—‘With great power comes great responsibility’—holds true. It became my responsibility to steer the story from its inception to its conclusion. That journey required making many difficult decisions; I learned not only to stand firm in my choices but also to adapt and change them when necessary.

Ultimately, our sole objective was to bring this series to the vision we had originally imagined. The greatest lesson I learned during this journey is that while making decisions can be tough, it is crucial to make them at the right time. Fans are eagerly looking forward to watching the trailer for ‘#Love’ and, subsequently, the entire series.” “I am waiting”

Director Balaji Mohan said…

“Love is something that no one in the world can fully comprehend. That is precisely why I keep telling stories about love. Men trying to understand women, and women trying to understand men—this is a journey that has spanned generations. The unique beauty of it lies in the fact that, even as years go by, love remains something that cannot be fully understood.

I do not keep talking about love because I claim to know everything about it. In reality, I do not fully understand love either. Like everyone else, I am constantly trying to understand it. That is what makes love always…”
…keeps things interesting and fresh. That is why I am keen on continuing to tell love stories on screen.

It brings me joy to know that fans learn a lot about love from my work. At the same time, I am careful to ensure that people do not form unrealistic expectations about real-life relationships based on the love stories shown in movies. I try to craft stories that are close to reality while also allowing the audience to dream and relate to the characters.

That is the approach we took with the ‘Love’ series. We tried to weave together romantic dreams and emotions grounded in real life. I hope viewers will be able to relate the series to their own experiences.”

Subsequently, questions were posed regarding the ‘#Love’ series, specifically focusing on whether chemistry or compatibility is more important in love.

To Arjun Das, who plays the character Mathew in the ‘#Love’ series:

When asked if he would be friends with Mathew in real life, he said, “I might be friends with him to talk about his adventures, like mountain climbing. At the same time, there might be certain aspects of his personality that I wouldn’t like. What appealed to me most about the character Mathew were his emotions and the vulnerable side he reveals in the story.”

Speaking about the character Tara, Aishwarya Lekshmi said:

“Playing Tara was a very liberating and joyful experience for me. I can relate myself to Tara by about 80 percent. There were many moments where I wasn’t really acting; I simply was that character.” Tara is not a character far removed from my own personality, unlike some of the other roles I have played; portraying her felt very natural. Moreover, I had a desire to act in a romantic story, and ‘#Love’ provided the perfect opportunity for that. We had previously planned to work together on a film, and I was disappointed when that didn’t happen; however, I am delighted that ‘#Love’ has now come to fruition. “Sometimes, good things take time to happen,” he said.

Subsequently, as part of the ‘#Love’ series, the duo was asked whether chemistry or compatibility is more important in love. They shared their respective views on what constitutes chemistry and compatibility. Notably, when asked about a good kiss, both agreed that both chemistry and compatibility are essential.

When asked which of the two is more important for love in real life, Arjun Das stated that compatibility is key. He expressed the view that chemistry might last only for a short while, whereas compatibility is necessary for the relationship to endure. Meanwhile, Aishwarya Lekshmi shared her perspective, noting that chemistry often develops first, and the relationship subsequently moves towards compatibility.

In today’s world, love often begins in the digital realm—through swiping, matching, and messaging on dating apps—rather than starting with an in-person meeting. The ‘Love’ series is built around this shift in modern romance and relationships.

Balaji Mohan, the director of this series, has carved a unique storytelling niche for himself in Tamil cinema. Having made his directorial debut with Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi, he went on to direct films such as Vaayai Moodi Pesavum, Maari, and Maari 2. His style—which approaches romance, the lives of young people, and modern relationships with natural humor— The series ‘Love’ has also generated significant anticipation.

The story of ‘Love’ revolves around two dating apps: ‘FOUND’ and ‘Find My Bae’. Tara and Mathew, the founders of these apps—whose business is finding perfect matches for others—find themselves unable to discover love for themselves. The narrative focuses on the relationship, romance, and clashes of opinion that emerge between these two rivals.

‘#Love’ is written by Nirmal Williams, with Sharada Subramanian and Swetha Chakravarthy serving as co-writers. The series is produced by May6 Entertainment Factory.

With the trailer now out, there is keen interest in how Balaji Mohan portrays modern-day romance and relationships, how the pairing of Arjun Das and Aishwarya Lekshmi shapes up, and how the series addresses the question of whether the bond is defined by chemistry or comfort.

Exploring various facets of relationships—including love, friendship, family, and ambition—the web series ‘Love’ premieres on Netflix on October 2.
