Poet Poovai Senguttuvan passes away!
Poet and lyricist Poovai Senguttuvan, a multifaceted figure, passed away in Chennai at 5.45 pm today due to old age. He was 90.
He has written more than a thousand film soundtracks, more than four thousand independent songs, and more than five thousand devotional songs. He was honored with the Kalaimamani Award in 1980. Among the film soundtracks, the song ‘Thirupparankundramthil Nee Sitthal Muruga…’ and the song ‘Naan Utthavam Veetupillai…’ written by him have become immortally famous over time. In particular, the song ‘Nalum vilavaan nilavukke pokalam…’ written by him was the song that was broadcast on Sri Lankan Radio all day when Armstrong set foot on the moon.
In addition to writing songs, he has also written many dance dramas and television dramas. He also has the honor of writing songs for five Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu. When Arignar Anna assumed office, his solo song ‘Arignar Anna’s rule’ was broadcast before the start of the public meeting and after the meeting ended.
Poovaiyar wrote the song ‘Karunaiyaum Nidhium Odnaai Jerntal Karunanidhiyakum’ for Kalaignar Karunanidhi, the song ‘Naan Utthava Veetupillai’ for Makkal Thilakam MGR, and the two Amman songs sung for the first time by revolutionary leader Jayalalithaa. Poovaiyar has also written songs for many of the plays of today’s Chief Minister Stalin.
