Epoch Poet Poovai Senguttuvan Passes Away in Chennai
Death due to ill health after his book was released last week
Ministers pay tribute to Poovai Senguttuvan at his residence
Poet and lyricist Poovai Senguttuvan, who was highly respected by the Tamil literary and film world, passed away in Chennai on the evening of September 5 due to ill health. He was 90.
While his last rites were held on Saturday, the Honorable Minister for Public Health, Mr. M. Subramanian, Minister for Hindu Religious and Endowments, Mr. P.K. Sekar Babu and Chairman of the Slum Replacement Board and Vice President of the Actors’ Association, Mr. Poochy Murugan, among others, paid tribute to his portrait and offered condolences to the family.
Poovai Senguttuvan, identified by Kaviyarasu Kannadasan, has written thousands of film songs and solo songs, stories, screenplays, dialogues for films, stage plays, dance plays, radio shows, and television series, among many others.
Poovai Senguttuvan is the author of songs that cannot be erased by time, including “There is no better temple for the mother”, “I am your child”, “The world created by God”, “If you laugh at Thiruparankundram”, “If you laugh at Thirupugazhi”, “If you laugh at Karunaiyum Nidhiyum He is the only one who has set all 133 chapters of Ayyan Valluvan’s Thirukkural in a simple style as a musical composition (133 songs). The late President Abdul Kalam sent him a congratulatory letter. The musical composition was published as a musical box titled ‘Kural Tharum Poor’ by musician Ilayaraja, and many newspapers praised it.
Poovai Senguttuvan has received numerous awards including Kalaimamani (1980), Kalaithurai Vidhakar Award (1997), Mahakavi Parathiyar Award (2020).
Poovai Senguttuvan has sons Poovai Dayanidhi and S Ravichandran, daughters Vijayalakshmi and Kalaichelvi, and grandchildren. Poovai Senguttuvan’s wife has already passed away. It is noteworthy that Poovai Senguttuvan’s wife’s sister’s husband is producer A L Alagappan and her sons are actor Udaya and director A L Vijay.
