Aiya R. Nallakannu was born on December 26, 1925, in Srivaikundam, Thoothukudi district.
While still a school student, he attended public meetings held by national leaders in Srivaikundam and listened to their speeches. He too became a sentient being due to the impact that he had.
He was influenced by the communist books given to him by a school teacher.
After completing his intermediate studies at Hindu College, Tirunelveli and pursuing his graduation, he became immersed in public life and left his studies midway.
He was inspired by the speech delivered by Jeeva at the workers’ conference held in Madurai in 1945. He began to actively participate in the communist movement.
He entered the field of struggle at a young age against the ruling class and in support of the poor and needy.
After independence, the party was banned and he led a life of hiding.
He was arrested by the police in 1949 and suffered many hardships.
The police inspector tortured the young Nallakannu by putting a lit cigarette butt on his thick moustache.
He was framed in a conspiracy case and imprisoned for seven years.
In 1958, he married Ranjitham Ammaiyar, the daughter of his party colleague.
Mr. Nallakannu, who was the leader of the Agricultural Workers’ Union for a long time, served as the Secretary of the Communist Party of India for nine years.
The hundredth birthday of Mr. Nallakannu, a political leader who is the epitome of virtues such as sacrifice, dedication, simplicity, and honesty, brought great joy to people like us.
Mr. Nallakannu, the hero of the century who was a symbol of public life. By donating his body to medical research students after his death, he became a great man who dedicated his life and body to the working class. His passing is irreparable to all of us. Let us pay homage to him.
