TO,

THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE
TAMILNADU,
CHENNAI.

Greetings,

It is a matter of common knowledge that the film Jananayagan—a grand production helmed by director H. Vinoth, starring actor Vijay, and produced by KVN Productions on a massive budget of approximately ₹500 crores—has been struggling to obtain a censor certificate due to various regulatory hurdles. Originally announced for a theatrical release during Pongal 2026, the film has faced continuous delays and remains unreleased to this day due to a multitude of reasons. Consequently, numerous parties who acquired the film’s overseas rights, regional distribution rights, and OTT streaming rights have suffered significant setbacks. There remains a glimmer of hope among stakeholders that, at the very least after the upcoming elections, the film will finally hit the screens, enjoy a successful run, and enable all investors to recoup their capital.

Amidst this precarious situation, rumors circulated yesterday regarding the leak of a five-minute action sequence from Jananayagan onto the internet. While the producers and industry observers were still grappling with the potential financial repercussions of that initial leak, reports emerging today have come as a devastating blow: the entire film—in high-definition (HD) quality—has reportedly surfaced on various websites, with thousands of people already downloading and watching it. Everyone within the film industry is acutely aware that, in the current climate, producing and releasing a film starring leading actors—let alone recouping the hundreds of crores invested in it—is no ordinary feat. Given that this has been announced as Vijay’s final film, fans may view the act of actively seeking out and watching it—regardless of the format—as a celebratory occasion. However, few seem to grasp that for the producers who invested their capital, this unauthorized release constitutes a monumental crisis. The filmmakers had originally planned to release Jananayagan as a multi-lingual “Pan-India” film; its current illicit circulation therefore represents a catastrophic loss for the entire film industry. Beyond the cinema sector itself, this act of piracy has also inflicted a loss of several crores in tax revenue upon the government. It would be no exaggeration to assert that piracy—much like natural disasters such as the Tsunami or the COVID-19 pandemic—poses a grave calamity to the film industry. Therefore, on behalf of the Tamil film industry, I earnestly request that the Police immediately register a case and take measures to prevent anyone from sharing this film on any platform—including websites and social media. Furthermore, I request that those responsible for the unauthorized release of this film be identified and punished.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Kothandaramaiah (K.R.)
Former President,
Tamil Film Producers Council and South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce
