Verchol Literary Award 2026 – Coordinated by Director Pa. Ranjith

The ‘Verchol Literary Award’ is an accolade presented annually over the past four years, initiated by the Neelam Cultural Centre. Dalit literature has played a pivotal role in reshaping the trajectory of Tamil literature. The objective of the ‘Verchol Literary Award’ is to honor the writers and researchers who have made significant contributions in this regard, and to commemorate their works through a critical and analytical lens. In keeping with this principle, the ‘Verchol Literary Award’ for the year 2022 was conferred upon the scholar Raj Gowthaman. Subsequently, the award for 2023 was presented to the writer and art critic Indran; the 2024 award to the writer Bama; and the 2025 award to the writer and social activist P. Sivakami. The ‘Verchol Award’—accompanied by a cheque for one lakh rupees—is presented following the screening of a documentary film on the selected literary personality, the release of a commemorative anthology, and a comprehensive discussion regarding their creative oeuvre.

The ‘Verchol Award’ for this year (2026) is being conferred upon the poet and theater artist N.D. Rajkumar.
N.D. Rajkumar is the figure who introduced into modern Tamil poetry a tribal oral tradition—a heritage that had remained unassimilated by the urbanized, ‘civilized’ life of the plains. His poems have made a significant contribution to Tamil literature, not merely through their form but equally through their content. Beyond deconstructing orthodox religious systems and their attendant myths, his poetry expansively unfolds within its verses the vast domains that the indigenous communities once claimed as their own. Organized by the Neelam Cultural Centre, the ‘Verchol Dalit Literary Gathering’—a two-day event—is scheduled to take place on April 18 and 19 at the T.N. Rajarathinam Art Auditorium, Muthamizh Peravai, Chennai. On the second day of the gathering (April 19, 2026), at approximately 4:00 PM, the 2026 Verchol Literary Award will be presented to poet N.T. Rajkumar.
