The movie ‘Kalan’ is jointly produced by Ramaletsumi Productions and Anusuya Film Productions. Written and directed by Veeramurugan, who directed ‘Kituku’, the film stars Appugutty, Deepa and Yasser in lead roles. Along with them, Sampath Ram, Cheran Raj, Manimaran, Rajesh, Peter Saravanan, Velu, Mukesh, Mohan, Bala and many others have played important roles.
Jayakumar and JK have done the cinematography for the film, which is composed by Jerson. Gurumurthy and Kumari Vijayan wrote the songs. With Thilakarajan Ambed as the artistic director, Variety Bala has designed the dance sequences. Vignesh Varnam and Ganesha have edited the film. Santhosh as sound engineer and Jagan Albert as deputy co-director. Balaji Saminathan, Mahesh and many others are working as Deputy Director. Karthik works as a PRO.
The launch event of the movie ‘Kalan’ was held on 19th October in Chennai. In this, Hindu People’s Party Founder President Arjun Sampath, Director’s Association President RV Udayakumar, Secretary Prajaru, Prajajankal Association Executive Committee Member and PRO Association President Vijaya Murali, playback singer and music composer Antonithasan participated as special guests.
While welcoming the guests, director Veeramurugan said, “Hello to all media friends, if this film is promoted and seen by people, it is because of you. I will never forget Arjun Sampath in my life. The person who called me and gave me money when Kitugu was released, rented a marriage hall and showed my film to people for free when there was no theater in Tuticorin, thanks to him. Thanks to Annan Pramesh, we were in the performance video with Nithyananda and they gave him and me the National Award. Then they asked to film Nithyananda’s story, I thought he would say OK but he didn’t, thanks to him. Thank you Vijaymurali sir. Thanks to RV Udayakumar sir.
After Kitugu, I started Naderam Godse, but there was a lot of opposition to that film. So I decided to start this film right away and this too got a lot of resistance. Then Gurumurthy Annan said I am with you, start right away and stayed with me till the end of the film. He works in the army. Thanks to him, he is traveling with me after taking leave from work. Thanks to JK Annan. Initially, Bharani was to be cast in this film. But, it was Manimaran’s brother who said that it would be better to cast Appukkutty instead of him. Not only that, Manimaran Annan’s finger was severed during the shooting. But, he continued acting regardless. Then Deepa Akka kept crying and that’s when we came to know. Even then, I will finish without going to the hospital, he said, thanks to him. She was signed for Lawrence Sir when Deepa decided to cast her sister. So will he come? We thought that. But he pretended to come right away, thanks to him. Composer Gerson bravely traveled with me when many refused to compose music for Kitugu. Not only that, no matter how many times and how many songs he listens to, he never gets bored. If he told me that a song wasn’t right, he would immediately delete it and put it from the beginning, he worked so hard, thanks to him. Even when I am writing the story, they have been traveling with me for two years saying, this is not an ordinary film, you will not shoot like that, but we are working with you. Playback singer and music composer Antonidas said, “I have sung in more than a thousand films in many languages including Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. I did not sing or act in this film, but the reason I came here was because of my younger brother Jerson, who is a music director. This is the second film where he is composing music. He needs to make it big. Even today we worship nature itself, but we worship it without knowing it. I mean, recently we celebrated Ayudha Puja. In it, we put camphor on the coconut and break it around, that is Panchabhuta worship. By putting camphor on coconut there is fire and there is water inside the coconut. When it is circulated, the wind gathers, and when it is broken in the air and broken on the ground, the two join together. Likewise, the worship of ancestral temples is very important, because such temples are the place where our forefathers have set foot, their breath lingers there. Today’s youth need it. The earth itself revolves in space, and that is the testimony of God’s power. Similarly, it is said that there is a sound of Om where the earth rotates. But, these are not properly brought to the people. I think such films will address the problem of lack of proper guidance for the youth. Actress Deepa said, “Hello to all who have come to the show. The people who spoke here said that this is a Sami film. But this film is a great struggle between adharma and dharma. In such films, only men are kept to speak the action lines. But, in this film, women are given importance and action lines are spoken through them. Director Veeramurugan has also said that there is nothing that women cannot do in this. Thanks to the director for giving me such a role.
When the Lord designed the woman, adding gold, pearls and flowers, it was not complete. Then when the snake let go of his hand and poured the venom on the woman, he attained perfection. Actor Appukutty said, “I am happy to have acted in Kalan. Thanks to all the adults on stage. Manimaran Annan is the most important reason for me to act in this film. One day he took me to meet the director, and when the director told me the story, I thought it would be a 20-day shoot and I would get a huge salary. But he said it was only 6 days in total. But you should play the important role in the film, as the mother-in-law of the hero, he said. Well, even if it’s only six days, they will pay a big salary, I thought. But he completed six days in four days. Whoever said it is a small film, they are shooting with two cameras. The shoot was very fast, many people shoot fast but the shots don’t turn out as expected. Although director Veeramurugan shot the scenes at a fast pace, he shot them very well. Even though I’ve been acting for four days, they’ve shown me like I’m in the whole film, which is a big thing. Veeramurugan sir’s speed got me scared at one point. He is a very brave man. Deepa has played the role of my sister. It’s a different film, thanks to the director for giving me a chance in this film.” He said.

Director Veeramurugan proved his mettle by taking films like Kitugu. He faced many problems with Kitugu. There was even a situation where he had to go to jail. But even though the film was not a big success in the theatres, it was well received by the people. Veeramurugan is in a position to run with his legs tied in Tamil cinema where others travel very casually. Because such was his aim, such were the pictures he took. They talked about nationalism in our films, then after the Dravidian movements, anti-God films were made. Then AP Nagarajan Samy took films. Actor Sivaji Ganesan was expelled from Dravida Kazhagam because he visited Tirupati. That’s good and that’s why he acted in so many spiritual films.
