RJ Balaji, the Radio Jockey turned writer, director & actor, who already showcased a Hindu Goddess as one of the prime characters in Mookuthi Amman (2020) a satirical fantasy comedy has churned out yet another such venture, this time, a God named Karuppu who takes human form to transform a Court head-lined by a corrupt Judge (Natty Nataraj after playing the protagonist in the recently released, TN 2026!) who too is at the mercy of Baby Kannan (R J Balaji) a two timing lawyer who can twist and turn things with his tongue – power!
There is another lady lawyer (Trisha) who appears ambiguous without letting the audience know which side of the fence she belongs to!
An elderly man (Indrans) and his sick daughter, Binu (Anagha Maya Ravi, she is very natural) from Kerala, land up at Chennai and the moment they arrive, the jewels that they carried for Binu’s surgery, get stolen and they lodge a police complaint. On recovery, the available jewels are handed over to the Court and it is at that juncture that the game starts.
With Baby Kannan and his team making smart moves, the dad and daughter are taken for a royal ride, of course, the Judge, holding a lion’s share in the proceedings.
Enter Karuppu (Suriya, truly stunning!) at the heart felt prayers of the old man (Indrans, he is too good for words!) and from then, it is a (courtroom) battle of wits between ‘Karuppu’ and Baby. ‘Karuppu’ is obviously provided with ample opportunities to flex his muscles as well as shake his legs in the song and dance routine.
Finally, good prevails over evil offering a fairy tale kind of wrap up!
Both Sdhivadha and Swasthika have been under-utilised given their respective talents!
The objectivity of the filmmaker definitely merits mention. But the execution could have been a little more tighter but Balaji has provided enough noteworthy moments to nourish and cherish!
A treat for the fans of Suriya on the strength of his swashbuckling performance. Dream Warrior Pictures has delivered one more sure fire winner!
