“I believe that positive changes will take place in Tamil cinema over the next few years,” expresses Producer G.K.M. Tamilkumaran with optimism.
“Apart from Superstar Rajini, no one else comes forward to assist producers,” stated Producer ‘Five Star’ Kathiresan during the audio launch ceremony of the film Room Boy.
“Only 30 percent of the budget is spent on actual production, while 70 percent goes toward the hero’s remuneration; yet, if the film fails, none of them step up to help,” lamented Producer ‘Five Star’ Kathiresan.
“I have lived with a dream for nearly 25 years, waiting for this very day,” expressed Jagan Rayan, the director of Room Boy, in an emotional moment.
“The Producers Council will soon undertake various measures to streamline and reform Tamil cinema,” stated Producer Radhakrishnan.
Room Boy — Audio & Trailer Launch Ceremony!
Produced by Suryakala Chandramoorthy under the banner of ACM Cinemas, Room Boy is a film written and directed by Jagan Rayan, a student of the Film Institute.
Newcomer C. Nikhil stars as the lead, supported by a cast including Harsha, Imman Annachi, Birla Bose, Kaathu Karuppu, Sadhana, Kavitha Vijayan, and Karpagam in pivotal roles. Mumbai-based model Nidhi Maroli has performed a dance number in the film.
The story centers on the protagonist, who works as a ‘room boy’ at a star-rated hotel in Yelagiri. One day, the hotel manager dies under mysterious circumstances. Simultaneously, the superintendent of a juvenile reform school goes missing. The plot explores the connection between these two incidents and the protagonist and his friends. The film is crafted as a suspense thriller infused with strong family sentiments.
With the film slated for a theatrical release in April, its audio and trailer launch ceremony was held in the presence of the press and media, attended by the film’s cast and crew, as well as various celebrities from the film industry. Speaking at this event, Producer Kalaipuli Thanu stated:
“As I arrived at this event, a blend of positive emotions and thoughts kept running through my mind. My sole desire was for this film to achieve massive success for its producers.
When they approached me to discuss the film, I asked them, ‘How much have you spent on this movie?’ They replied, ‘We have invested a significant amount—running into crores.’ To that, I responded, ‘In today’s climate, you have indeed spent a great deal. However, the quality of the film must be exceptional enough to justify that level of expenditure.’
From the trailer and the songs, it is evident that this will be a complete and wholesome film—packed with song sequences, action scenes, and various other elements that fans have come to expect. Nikhil has delivered a fine performance, and the director has executed his vision brilliantly. I wish everyone involved great success with this film.”
Speaking at the event, Tamil Kumaran, President of the Tamil Film Producers Council, stated:
“This morning, several key figures from the Tamil film industry gathered together for a consultative meeting. During that session, several crucial decisions were made regarding the direction in which Tamil cinema should head and how we can elevate it to the next level. Specifically, we discussed the necessity of ensuring that smaller films receive the appropriate priority and screen space in theaters. We have formulated specific guidelines and established certain key protocols to address this. I am confident that, over the next few years, Tamil cinema will witness positive and significant changes.”
Furthermore, certain measures have been introduced to ensure that young directors and producers who are new to the industry receive greater opportunities.
I firmly believe that this film, Room Boy, will undoubtedly prove to be a successful venture. The visuals in the trailer have turned out exceptionally well. My heartfelt congratulations and best wishes go out to the entire film crew. Thank you.”
Speaking at the event, Five Star Kathiresan, Secretary of the Tamil Film Producers Council, stated:
“My heartfelt greetings to everyone present. When we requested that the ‘First Look’ poster for the film Room Boy be unveiled, Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi Sir immediately agreed and graciously released it.” It is only when we encourage, appreciate, and celebrate the assistance rendered by an individual that ten others will subsequently come forward to offer similar help. On behalf of the Producers’ Council, I express my heartfelt gratitude to Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi for unveiling this “First Look,” thereby demonstrating such a gesture of gracious respect. For when a celebrity extends their support to a film in this manner, that movie reaches an audience of millions. Moreover, it garners a tremendous amount of attention.
To cite an example: had any other producer undertaken the film Thaai Kizhavi, it would not have received such extensive marketing exposure. However, actor Sivakarthikeyan not only produced the film himself but also lent his voice to one of its songs. He dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the film’s promotion. That is precisely why Thaai Kizhavi was able to reach the masses so easily and on such a grand scale.
Similarly, on behalf of the Producers’ Council, I once again extend my gratitude to Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi for helping to bring the title Room Boy to the public’s attention. The very title Room Boy resonates with everyone; it is a concept to which everyone can relate—specifically, the context of a hotel…
When staying at a hotel, one encounters people from all walks of life. Such a place is home to countless stories. In this film, the character named “Roobai” serves as a pivotal figure—one who witnesses and observes these many narratives unfolding within the hotel.
Another delightful aspect of this project is that the lead role is played by the son of the film’s producer, Surya Kala Chandramoorthy. I would like to take this opportunity to convey my heartfelt best wishes to him, as this marks his debut film. Congratulations to him!
When a producer undertakes a film project, he provides opportunities to over 200 individuals. Yet, he rarely has the final say in selecting the story itself. Consequently, if the film fails, it is he who ends up on the streets—facing financial ruin. In contrast, in Andhra Pradesh, the entire fraternity of actors rallies together to protect and support their producers. Unfortunately, such a culture is completely absent here in Tamil Nadu. With the sole exception of Superstar Rajini, no one else steps forward to assist the producers. In Andhra, the lead actor stands by the producer; here, however, only 30 percent of the budget is allocated to actual production costs, while 70 percent goes toward the hero’s remuneration—yet, if the film fails, the hero offers no recourse. Many such irregularities plague our industry. I urge all producers to register their production companies with the Producers Council; the Council will stand firmly by your side. I wish this film every success,” he concluded.
Radha Krishnan, Secretary of the Tamil Film Producers Council, spoke as follows:
“I am delighted to participate in the audio launch ceremony of the film Room Boy. This event holds special significance as it is the very first official gathering to take place following the recently concluded elections of the Tamil Film Producers Council. All the newly elected office bearers are present here today.
Everyone is well aware of the current state of affairs within the film industry. We are facing immense challenges and navigating through a critical juncture. The monumental responsibility of rescuing the Tamil film industry from this precarious situation rests squarely upon the shoulders of the industry stalwarts and administrative office bearers gathered here on this dais.
We must all unite and work in tandem to overcome these numerous hurdles and ensure that the Tamil film industry returns to its former glory and success. In fact, just this morning, the Distributors’ Council, the Exhibitors’ Council, and the Producers Council convened a crucial joint meeting to address these very issues.” Several key decisions were made during the meeting. It was resolved that, henceforth—regardless of whether one is a major star or a technical artist—if an advance payment is accepted, priority must be given exclusively to that specific producer. Everyone present agreed that the film industry would flourish only if producers stand united and remain strong. The Producers Council is poised to take swift action to streamline and reform Tamil cinema in the very near future. I extend my best wishes for the film Room Boy to achieve tremendous success.
Speaking at the event, Jagan Rayan, the director of the film Room Boy, stated:
“I won’t speak at length here; I prefer to let my cinema do the talking. For nearly 25 years, I have lived with a dream—a dream centered on this very day. Today, that dream has finally become a reality.” He dedicated the audio launch ceremony to his father, N.V. Sundaram, noting, “He always held an unwavering belief that his son would one day become a film director.”
With his father’s support, instead of pursuing a formal degree in film direction, I chose to study Sound Engineering and Recording; in 2004, I was honored with a State Award at the Kalaivanar Arangam.
“Cinema is an ocean. While a few dive deep to unearth pearls of success, many others simply sink beneath the waves. Yet, deep within me, I harbored an unshakeable conviction that one day, I would triumph.” After years of struggle, I approached a producer seeking assistance to make a film, offering to mortgage my own land as collateral; however, he declined that offer and instead suggested, “Make the film with my son in the lead role.” The words the producer spoke next served as my greatest source of inspiration: “Failure is an old acquaintance to me; I reached my current standing only after enduring countless setbacks. But you—you must succeed.” Throughout the entire filming process, the producer granted me complete creative freedom; it is precisely because of this autonomy that I was able to craft this film to such a high standard. I extend my gratitude to all the artists and technical crew members who contributed to this film. In particular, I wish to thank Cinematographer Bharathi and Lyricist Suryamoorthy for their invaluable support. “For all of us involved, this film has been a monumental journey. We are absolutely confident that Room Boy will be a resounding success.” Thank you, everyone.
