How Did Vijay Win?

Actor Y.G. Mahendra has expressed the following views regarding the results of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections:
“Questions such as ‘How did Vijay win?’, ‘For what reason did he win?’, or ‘Did he win merely as a film personality?’ no longer have any place. Vijay won for one reason and one reason alone: The people desired it, and they elected him. That is all—argument closed. The verdict of the people is the verdict of the Almighty.
This represents an initiative for change. The people desired that a fresh flood should sweep away the stagnant waters—that a process of rejuvenation should take place. They determined that Vijay was that ‘fresh flood,’ and they have brought him to power. As a fellow actor, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to him.
We have known Vijay’s family for many years. I offer him my best wishes with the confidence that, as a Tamilian and an Indian, he will deliver equal justice to all the people of Tamil Nadu—and when I say ‘all people,’ I mean without any religious bias or distinction between the rich and the poor.
I wish Mr. Vijay success in transforming Tamil Nadu—which has, to some extent, become a desert—back into a lush oasis. There is no politics involved in this, nor anything else. As a common citizen, I am simply offering my congratulations to the new leadership; that is all. Thank you.”
