Despite facing competition from various other films, the recently released movie The Dark Heaven is successfully running in theaters for its third week. Its success is being hailed in the film industry as a beacon of hope for low-budget films. Director Balaji celebrated this success with a special event in his hometown, Tirunelveli.
Directed by Tirunelveli native Balaji, The Dark Heaven was released on September 18th. The film features a cast that includes Sidhu, Dharshika, Riythvika, Vela Ramamoorthy, Nizhalgal Ravi, Jayakumar, Saran, Arul D. Shankar, Sathya, Chaplin Balu, Gopal, and many others.
Manikandan PK handled the cinematography, while Sakthi Balaji composed the music for the film. This film has been jointly produced by Kothai Entertainment and MS Swiss Film Factory.
Released as a suspense thriller, the movie has received a warm reception from the audience.
Yesterday, a success celebration and a fan appreciation event were held in Nellai (Tirunelveli), the director’s hometown. Dinesh, the Managing Director of Dinamalar (Tirunelveli and Nagercoil editions), and Advocate Kamalanathan attended the event as special guests; they presented success plaques to the film crew and offered their congratulations.
Speaking at the event, Dinesh, the Managing Director of Dinamalar (Tirunelveli and Nagercoil editions), said:
“Director Balaji has been a friend of mine for the past nine years. Hailing from Nellai, he has done an excellent job making this film with local actors. It is a suspense thriller. Sakthi Balaji has composed outstanding music for this movie.” “The lead actors and the rest of the cast have portrayed their characters exceptionally well in this film. Balaji, who hails from the Nellai region, should go on to direct many more films featuring such unique storylines. Usually, success celebrations are held in Chennai, but I congratulate Director Balaji for celebrating this film’s success in his own hometown,” he said.
Speaking at the event, actor Jayakumar said:
“I witnessed firsthand the hard work Balaji put into this film and the struggles he faced; he used to share everything with me. Balaji is a good soul. I will show up whenever and wherever he calls me. This is a unique film crew; there is no hierarchy here—even the producer would fetch tea. It was a new learning experience for me. This is a film made with genuine passion and heart. Balaji has everyone’s blessings. I wish the film great success.” Speaking at the event, actress Dharshika said:
“This feels like a family gathering. The team faced many challenges while making the film, but once it was completed, we held the audio launch, press meets, and thanksgiving events, and even visited various theaters. It has been a delightful experience. This is my debut film—one I am proud of—and this platform is truly special to me.
I want to thank the director for casting me as ‘Umayal’ in this movie; that character will always remain close to my heart.
Sometimes, good films are made but go unnoticed. However, seeing our film reach major multiplexes like PVR and INOX makes me feel incredibly proud of our producers. They have ensured a proper release and reach for the film, and I must thank them for that. Best wishes to everyone! Thank you.” Speaking at the event, the film’s lead actor, Sidhu, said:
“I came here intending to speak in a lively and cheerful manner. However, watching the video about my journey that was screened here left me deeply moved. My life has truly been a long journey. I moved from Tiruvannamalai to Chennai and pursued my ambitions while living in a small 10×10 room in Saligramam. It was only after noticing my efforts that people reached out and gave me opportunities; I have been growing steadily ever since. It was mentioned here that I appeared as a junior artist in the movie Raja Rani. Not only that, but I also made a similar appearance in the film Vallinam, which starred the lead actor of this current movie.
To everyone who feels disheartened about being a junior artist, I want to say this: the camera is the same for everyone. It captures beauty regardless of who stands before it. To stand in front of it…”
It is simply a matter of our time and opportunity arriving. Speaking of director Balaji—even while I was acting in the film, we didn’t develop a close bond because he was under immense work-related pressure, and I was focused on my performance. It was only when the promotional work for the film began that I truly understood him. He is someone with an incredible passion for cinema. Beyond that, he has a great sense of humor; I have found a friend and a brother in him.
Even today, I see many people in Saligramam wandering about in search of an opportunity; there are countless such individuals. There are those who remain unmarried even at the age of 45, determined not to tie the knot until they have achieved something significant in cinema. It saddens me to think of them carrying such pain; there are so many living with that kind of struggle.
In this context, Balaji stands out as a truly talented individual. He will undoubtedly continue to succeed. Many people make films without knowing how to reach the audience, handle the business side, manage the release, or execute the marketing.
Balaji writes excellent stories, crafts scenes beautifully, directs skillfully, and works diligently. Beyond all that, he is an expert at planning. He is clear and deeply focused on how to take a film to the audience; he knows exactly how to position a movie and turn it into a major success.
These are qualities that are absolutely essential for a director. “He is destined to reach great heights. Similarly, everyone who worked on this project—including the cinematographer and the music composer—will go on to achieve great success. I also want to thank my co-stars—Rithvika, Dharshika, and Jayakumar Sir—as well as all the other artists involved,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Producer Gopal said:
“We are holding a success meet for this film. We are celebrating its victory. In terms of what this film has achieved: we have earned double the profit on our initial investment. I say this with pride—this film has generated massive profits for us. People rarely disclose profit figures for films, but we are doing so boldly. We will share the detailed box-office collection figures later. It is a remarkable achievement for a small-budget film to attain such great success and profitability. I thank the audience for making this possible, and I thank the entire film crew.”
Director Balaji said:
“Today, I will do just one thing with a sense of peace: for the first time in seven years, I will sleep soundly. Between 2019 and 2026, this is the first time I will truly sleep without worry. Some people mentioned facing minor issues, but I faced massive challenges. I can never forget the advice I received: ‘Do not be afraid of problems; keep running.’ I cannot forget my assistant directors. They say there are 24 crafts in cinema, but these individuals worked as if they were handling 20 of them single-handedly. I thank the actors—Sithu, Rithvika, Dharshika, Jayakumar Sir, Nizhalgal Ravi Sir, Vela Ramamoorthy Sir, and everyone else. My thanks go out to all the technicians as well.” “Technical Crew
I am afraid that if I mention names individually, I might inadvertently leave someone out. My thanks to everyone. The actors who played even small roles in this film are talented; they will soon carve a niche for themselves. I am confident that if they pursue opportunities with dedication, they will reach great heights. Best wishes to all. And a big thank you to the fans,” he said.
At the event, plaques were presented to everyone involved—actors and technical crew alike. This was a gesture rarely seen in the Tamil film industry in recent years.
